Kauri pens crafted from timber salvaged
from the Historic Commercial Hotel at Mangawhare after high
winds damaged the hotel in 2007
1km north of Dargaville hearing towards the Waipoua Kauri forest this hotel
still stands today looking over the great NortheRn Wairoa River
and was built in 1875 for Sir John logan Campbell
After a storm in 2007 with winds up to 200ks an hour the verandah on the
front of the Commercial Hotel was blown off and over the top of the hotel.
The timber verandah posts seen in these photos were retrieved by Woodturner
Rick Taylor from the Woodturners Studio & Gallery
He lives right next to the Commercial Hotel. In 2009 Rick decided to craft
some of the kauri post timber into pens. this Kauri timber would have been hand
cut
to build this historic hotel and has a great feeling to artist Rick Taylor it
is part of New Zealands history. Rick likes to craft his pen from wood that comes
from
historic places in and around the Kauri Coast.
Mangawhare was the largest port on the
NortheRn Wairoa river back in the 1800 & 1900's when the Kauri cutters and gum
diggers came to the land of the long white cloud
New Zealand Dargaville was not here then so the Commercial hotel was a bank
pub and trading post next to the hotel was a black smith and a trading store.
the trading store is still standing today as well. The black smiths yard and
sheds have all gone but what was left to remind us is lots of horse shoes in the
ground at Rick Taylors home.
Over the road from the hotel and Ricks home there is the site of the sailing
ship WAI ITI that capsized at Mangawhare in 1907 after her
bilge keel became wedged against the steep
